WEATHER BRIBERY
Did the Weather Website purposefully modify the weather forecast for a community?
The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating charges that the Weather Website was paid to change the June 26th forecast for Long Grove, Illinois. The forecast for the entire region called for isolated thunderstorms starting at 3 PM. However, the specific Long Grove forecast called for sunny skies until 6 PM. This was, suspiciously, the closing time for Long Grove’s Strawberry Fest activities.
At an afternoon press conference, NWS’ Chief Meteorologist Sonny Caelum stated that
“The Weather Service intends to vigorously investigate these terrible allegations. The public has come to rely on the accuracy and exactitude of weather forecasts. That the Weather Website would issue a phony forecast, just so that the festival’s attendance wouldn’t suffer is beyond belief. A loss of faith in weather forecasts could do more harm to the economy than the recent collapse of the mortgage industry. ”
A press release from the office of Illinois’ senior senator Dick Durbin (D) stated that
“Senator Durbin was shocked that the Weather Website was caught violating the public trust. However, the Senator does not believe that an investigation is necessary because that is the way things are done in Illinois.”
