ESPN STRONG-ARMS NBA
National cable sports channel ESPN has forced the National Basketball Association (NBA) to accept a new reality.
ESPN’s decision to broadcast an ‘interview’ with LeBron James leading up to his announcement of the team that he was selling his services to, has caused almost as much uproar as the infamous decision by NBC on November 17, 1968 to switch from a Raiders-Jets game with only 65 seconds on the clock to begin showing a new version of Heidi.
ESPN’s critics state that this show demonstrates that ESPN is in bed with sports figures.
Jesse Jackson (does anyone still care what he says?) has pulled out the race card, again, comparing the owner of the Cleveland team to an owner of a pre-Civil War plantation.
However, facts is facts. Almost ten million fools tuned into ESPN to watch ‘The Decision’.
Never wanting to pass up a buck, ESPN has forced the NBA to require that all future free agent signings of type A players be covered by a one-hour Decision special. These specials will include not only the announcement of the lucky team, but some early childhood human interest stories to attract the female viewer. As ESPN’s Ramon LaRue (VP-Media Relations) stated:
“Every kid’s dream should be that one day, he will have his own shot at being on The Decision. We want to make the story leading up to The Decision more important than game seven of the NBA Championship Series.”
