Are Democrats who chair the House Ways and Means committee cursed?
The chairmanship of the House Ways and Means committee has turned into a political nightmare for the Democratic party.
First Dan Rostenkowski (D-IL) who chaired the committee for fourteen years was caught in a conspiracy to launder Post Office money through stamps and postal vouchers. He was convicted and sentenced to eighteen months in prison. President Clinton (D-AR) pardoned him in 2000.
Now Charles Rangel (D-NY), a Congressman for almost forty years, is charged with thirteen ethics violations including improper use of the congressional free mail privilege. Mr. Rangel won his first Congressional election by campaigning against then ethically-challenged incumbent Adam Clayton Powell. Apparently Mr. Rangel forgot why he was elected in the first place.
A unnamed spokesman for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi confessed that
“The Democrats don’t know what to do. Every time that we try and present ourselves as the party of change, it turns out that we’re more corrupt than anyone else.”
